Noemi's first camera was a Nikon EM given to her by her father when she was fifteen, and she's been taking photos ever since. Noemi works as a Photo Editor in New York City.
Sessions is about glamour and glitz, the artists are A-listers and the video segments and photogalleries are known for their high production value. As the lead photo editor for AOL Latino, I produce all Sessions photogalleries, working with the editorial team to create compelling experience that has become a hallmark of the franchise.
The real challenge here was photographing all 24 musicians that formed this mariachi group. Photographed by Joseph Llanes and produced by myself, we brainstormed various ways of getting the group together for a portrait.
Again, photographing 24 musicians simultaneously proved to be a challenge, so we took clever advantage of available space both in the studio and locations around the office. The final product was a tightly edited series of images displayed in a full-screen experience.
I pitched this feature to the AOL Latino editorial team, the idea was to follow an artist around for a day catching a glimpse into their lives. The images are candid and show the artist doing everyday things. For this project, produced by me and shot by Rick Gershon, we followed artist Indio on location in New York as he worked out at his gym, hung out at a tattoo parlor with friends and got a bite to eat at his favorite neighborhood restaurant.
Fashionista is AOL's fashion design competition. Top three finalists were flown to New York for the final challenge. AOL Staff photographer Nicole Goksel photographed this shoot. Because Nicole was on staff, we were able to work more closely in the days leading up to the shoots. I had a clear vision to make these images show intensity and high-drama that you see with a reality show.
In the Fashionista competition, winning designer Horacio Nieto, won the opportunity to design a dress for celebrity Candela Ferro to wear to a People en Espanol party in Miami. Photographer, Barbara P. Fernandez photographed Candela as she got ready for the event. In directing this shoot, I wanted these images to read like a documentary, Using a photojournalism approach to documenting the night as it unfolded. Shooting Candela as she prepares for the red-carpet - catching the little details that make the set of images interesting and varying.
This shoot was really hands-on for me as an art director. I hired photographer Pieter van Hattem having in mind that he's such a creative and resourceful photographer and together we discussed different ways to shoot the portraits for this Sessions. Victor Manuelle had just debuted a new album that had a vintage, classic design. We wanted to get the same look and feel with out portraits. We found different backgrounds around the office at AOL that we could mix with mirrors and lights to create a vintage feel.

Dejando Huellas showcases emerging artists, and similar to AOL's Sessions it features video performances and photo galleries. From the conception of the franchise, I knew we had to differentiate it from Sessions. I direct my photographers to capture a rougher, grittier look and feel to the photos. Portraits are shot without a seamless, using the environment as a backdrop. We've had amazing successes with artists posing on the rooftop, loading docks, restrooms and elevators.
Musician Alex Cuba was so expressive in his look and sound that the environment was secondary. For the portraits, we chose a minimal backdrop -- a hallway at the studio with vertical lights. His energetic attitude really shone through in his images, photographed by Pieter van Hattem.
These are a few of the shoots from the various Dejando Huellas shoots we've worked on. We are allowed more freedom with these artists and the photographer gets to play with the set ups. Flex allowed us into the green room and we got some great shots of him hanging out, photographed by Pieter van Hattem. Zoe was brave and climbed up a wall in the building's entrance for photographer by Sam Comen. And Vico C was eager to have photographer, Joseph Llanes, shoot him and romping around the couch and hamming it up for the camera.
I worked as a photo researcher with publishers PMG-Press for its Perspectivas book, a spanish-language textbook that printed its 9th edition in 2009. I was tasked with requesting permission and securing rights and clearences for many of the images and illustrations.
Similar to Perspectivas, this spanish language textbook presented a fun challenge in that all of my negotiations were done with publishers and copyright holders in Mexico and Spain.
Each Season, the beauty and style editor puts together a slideshow of the top trends, clothing and accessories must-haves. I worked with the editor to create a slideshow that incorporated the alphabet along with products featured to make a clicky, fun package.
What to do when you get an assignment for impossible-to-find images? Shoot them yourself! When the Health editor gave me an image request for a slideshow of specific food items located in specific areas of a fridge, i knew that these images were going to be hard to find. So, I grabbed my camera, styled and shot the images at my home. The text is full of instruction and advice; the images needed to be exact to precisely illustrate the captions.
